Documentation
Welcome to the official DRIFT Linux documentation. Here you will find the essential information to get started with the distribution.
Hardware Requirements
- Processor: 64-bit AMD/Intel CPU, 2 GHz or faster
- RAM: minimum 2 GB, 4 GB or more recommended for more demanding tasks
An ARM version is also planned and will be available in the future.
Installation Guide
At the moment, DRIFT Linux is not intended for disk installation: it is currently designed to be used in live mode only.
To get started:
- Download the ISO from the Downloads page.
- Create a bootable USB drive using a tool such as balenaEtcher, Rufus, or
dd. - Boot your system from the USB drive.
- Select the desired mode from the boot menu.
DRIFT Linux is also Secure Boot Ready, meaning it can boot on systems with Secure Boot enabled without requiring it to be disabled.
Disk installation support will be introduced in a future release.
Network Activation
Network connectivity, both wired and wireless, is disabled by default to avoid interfering with forensic environments where DRIFT Linux is used. To enable the network, you need to:
- Select the "DRIFT Connection Management" tool from the start menu or the icon on the Desktop
- Enable wired or wireless network
- Enable the network services (NetworkManager) or wireless (WPA Supplicant)
Note: if you enable NetworkManager or WPA Supplicant directly, the network will be activated automatically.
Persistence
DRIFT Linux can also be used with persistence, allowing data and configuration to survive reboots.
To enable persistence, you need to:
- Create an EXT4 partition labeled WRITABLE on a drive
- Attach the drive to the system
- Select the "persistence" mode from the boot menu.
This allows the system to use the persistent area while running in live mode.
